Kaptur Statement on House Passage of Russia, Belarus Sanctions Bill

March 17, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) – Co-Chair of the bipartisan Congressional Ukraine Caucus – released the following statement on the House passage of the Suspending Normal Trade Relations with Russia and Belarus Act. The legislation will now be sent to the Senate for its consideration.

Today, the House passed the Suspending Normal Trade Relations with Russia and Belarus Act which will prevent Russia from selling goods in the United States at a preferential duty rate, and allow President Biden to raise tariffs on products from Russia and Belarus.

"The community of civil nations around the world must use their full powers to stop Vladimir Putin's unprovoked, catastrophic war against Ukraine," said Rep. Kaptur. "We are witnessing thousands of Ukrainian civilians and defenders being murdered by a despot. The United States and our allies must assail the ruthless Russian war machine with every tool in our arsenal. These additional economic sanctions and penalties Congress is imposing will hit Putin and his treacherous enablers where it hurts. Let us keep turning the screws tighter and tighter until they bring this tragic war to an end."
