9/11 First Responders Last Call Memorial complete at Toledo Memorial Park
TOLEDO - The First Responders Last Call Memorial is now complete at Toledo Memorial Park.
Saturday's dedication ceremony brought a full morning of events, starting with a motorcade that escorted one of the last beams from the World Trade Center downtown to the park.
The beam was slowly put into place on the top of the memorial, along with a flag.
A crowd of people watched as the project, years in the making, was finished.
"All these people that are here are definitely supporting our community and this is a great monument for Sylvania, Ohio to have one of the last beams from Ground Zero," said Janice French.
French brought some children from the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio to see the ceremony.
"I think it's a somber, but happy moment too to explain to these children, they weren't even alive when it happened."
"That's one of the reasons that we wanted to do this is to teach our younger people what exactly happened," Jeff Clegg said.
Clegg is the president of Toledo Memorial Park. He has worked several years to organize the volunteers and raise the money needed for the memorial.
"It started out with my little chicken scratch on a legal pad, several artist renditions later and a great architect, they took that rough drawing and made a beautiful monument," Clegg said.
Speakers at the event included Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, Air Force veteran Paula Thornhill, Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn and Sylvania's Mayor Craig Stough.
The ceremony ended with the ringing of the last bell, in memory of first responders who made made the last call for our country.
