Lorain County and Ohio’s coastal counties will use $700,763 to enhance homeland security, according to an announcement from U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo.
Lorain County will receive a $111,669 grant for the Operation Stonegarden program, which aims to boost cooperation among local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to protect America’s borders.
The money also will assist local governments and law enforcement agencies to “prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism and other catastrophic events,” according to Kaptur’s office.
“We live in a dangerous world,” said Kaptur, whose district includes Ohio coastal communities including Vermilion, Lorain, Sheffield Lake and Avon Lake.
“Whether it’s domestic terrorism, with Orlando two weeks ago, or international terrorism, with Istanbul yesterday, the harsh reality is we need to take every possible reasonable step to prepare for potential threats and to protect ourselves,” she said.
Kaptur was referring to the recent attacks in Florida and Turkey that claimed the lives of dozens of people.
Kaptur is a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee and serves on the Homeland Security Subcommittee, which has oversight over the federal Department of Homeland Security.
The other Ohio counties to receive the money are:
• Lake County: $97,389
• Ashtabula County: $87,869
• Erie County: $106,909
• Cuyahoga County: $102,149
• Lucas County: $97,389
• Ottawa County: $102,149
