PERKINS TWP. — The area’s Congressional delegate shipped a boatload of money into Erie County so local deputies can protect area waterways.
U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo, helped deliver almost $107,000 in federal funds to subsidize boat and shore-based patrols, near marinas and on lakefront roadways, staffed by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.
Other area police departments, including Huron and Sandusky, also participate in these marine patrols. Local authorities normally schedule boat patrols during the summer months.
Grant funds should cover overtime costs, fuel and maintenance.
The costs — spread out from Sept. 1, 2016 through Aug. 31, 2019 — aim to cover expenses for overtime, fuel and boat maintenance.
Among the funding’s primary intended purposes: to protect from “terrorist events; movement of terrorists and weapons of mass effect; human and contraband smuggling; and other situations that require law enforcement involvement, enhancing the security and protection of Ohio's international border from Ohio's most western border to its most eastern border."
“We live in a dangerous world,” Kaptur said in a statement. “Whether it’s domestic terrorism, with Orlando (three) weeks ago, or international terrorism, with Istanbul (earlier this week), the harsh reality is we need to take every possible, reasonable step to prepare for potential threats and to protect ourselves.”
