This summer, the Toledo International Youth Orchestra will be the first youth orchestra to travel to Cuba.
Language barriers might challenge the experience, but the Toledo students expect they will still be able to communicate freely with their Cuban counterparts.
“It’s really neat to be able to communicate through music,” said Pilar Athaide-Victor, 17, a violinist from Swanton.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Reps. Sander Levin (D-Mich.), Mike Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) and Mike Quigley (D-Ill.), members of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus, continue to call on Russia to release Ukrainian fighter pilot and Member of Parliament Nadiya Savchenko. News of their latest statements on her behalf was released on January 13.
On December 17, 2015, Ms. Savchenko began a hunger strike and is reported to be in ill health.

WASHINGTON - NASA Glenn Research Center Director Jim Free celebrated his facility's 75th anniversary on Tuesday with a Capitol Hill visit to pitch its many scientific breakthroughs.
Free and the Congress member whose district includes the Brook Park research center - Toledo Democrat Marcy Kaptur - used a Space Transportation Association trade group luncheon to tout terrestrial applications of technology developed at NASA Glenn.

Local elected officials took shots Monday at Republic Steel’s decision last week to idle its facility in Lorain indefinitely.
“Republic’s news of its temporary idling due to energy market conditions and steel dumping is yet another recent example of how what we do in Lorain is tied to international economics and policy that are outside of our control,” Mayor Chase Ritenauer said in a statement.
