Kaptur Announces $24.5M Infrastructure Grant for Erie County
Washington, DC – Today, Representative Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) announced the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a highly competitive $24.5 Million grant to improve U.S. Route 6 and extend the Sandusky Bay Pathway in Erie County.
This week, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) awarded a $24.5 Million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant to the Ohio Department of Transportation for Erie County’s project to improve U.S. Route 6 and extend the Sandusky Bay Pathway. The Erie County project was one of only 166 nationwide to receive funding through the highly competitive DOT RAISE grant program.
In April, Rep. Kaptur wrote a letter to DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg supporting Erie County’s application for RAISE grant project funding. The RAISE grant program received a 50 percent increase in funding this year due to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which Rep. Kaptur helped pass in 2021.
The $24.5 Million in funding will support the replacement of approximately five existing intersections with roundabouts along 6.3 miles of U.S. Route 6, as well as the construction of 5.9 miles of the Sandusky Bay Pathway city-wide coastal trail and greenway system along Lake Erie.
“US Route 6 is a critical part of Northern Ohio’s infrastructure – connecting people to jobs and spurring development and growth,” said Rep. Kaptur. “Thanks to bipartisan collaboration, the Jobs and Infrastructure bill is helping deliver commonsense investments in jobs, roads, and quality of life for Erie County. By deploying federal dollars to this crucial project, we will make necessary safety and efficiency improvements while bringing to life the Sandusky Bay Pathway. It has been an honor to work with Manager Wobser and Commissioner Shenigo to deliver real results for Erie County.”
“This is a game changer for Erie County,” said Erie County Commissioner Pat Shenigo. “Without Representative Marcy Kaptur’s leadership, experience and influence in Washington, this funding would not have become a reality. This $24 Million project represents one of the largest federal investments in our community’s history. We are grateful for Representative Kaptur’s efforts in securing this money for us. It is extraordinary.”
“This RAISE grant will catalyze the completion of the Sandusky Bay Pathway, a regional pathway connecting citizens and visitors to our greatest natural resources, Sandusky Bay/Lake Erie,” said City of Sandusky City Manager Eric Wobser. “The pathway will provide a safe multi-purpose path linking Sandusky and Huron, providing multi-modal connections to community assets including Downtown Sandusky, Cedar Point, the Pipe Creek Wilderness Area, the Cedar Point Sports Center, and several local metro parks. Additionally, improvements to U.S. Route 6 will create roundabouts and other improvements that will improve traffic flow and spur development of this important corridor that welcomes millions of visitors annually to the Shores and Islands Region. This project, a collaboration including ODOT, Erie County, Sandusky, Huron, Huron Township, Perkins Township, and Norfolk Southern would not be possible without Congresswoman Kaptur’s leadership in delivering funds to her district via this highly competitive grant program. We are incredibly grateful.”
