Kaptur Announces DOJ Violence Prevention Award to YWCA in Partnership with TPS

September 23, 2023

Toledo, OH — Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) announced a $350,000 award to Engage Men and Boys as Allies in the Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls from the Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Violence Against Women to the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Northwest Ohio. The Grants to Engage Men and Boys as Allies in the Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls program supports projects that develop and implement strategies that create educational programming and community organizing to encourage men and boys to work as allies with women and girls to prevent domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and sex trafficking.

“This funding for the YWCA in partnership with TPS will help to build awareness of the threats to women and girls including domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and sex trafficking,” said Congresswoman Kaptur. “Education is an important tool to ensure that young men in our community are raised as allies, and can spot warning signs, and help prevent violence against our young women. I know that this funding is the beginning of a partnership that will help to foster understanding in our NW Ohio communities and ensure that we continue to combat violence against women in all the forms it might present itself. I will always fight for federal funds that can come back home to help address critical problems we face in our region.”

With this funding, the YWCA of Northwest Ohio will implement the project AMEND Together to engage young men and boys as role models and integrate education on violence against women in Toledo, Ohio. In partnership with Toledo Public Schools (TPS), targeting school-aged boys ages 12-19, the YWCA will:

  • Build awareness and understanding of the issue of violence against women and girls.
  • Identify and challenge harmful attitudes and beliefs that contribute to violence.
  • Develop communication and empathy skills to support healthy relationships.
  • Take action to prevent violence against women and girls in their community.
