Kaptur Announces Nearly $8 Million in Federal Funding To Strengthen Northern Ohio Economic Development in Response to Coronavirus

September 10, 2020

Cleveland, Toledo, Lakewood, Lorain, Parma, Sandusky, and Cuyahoga County receive funding

Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, announced $7,975,180 in federal investments for communities across Northern Ohio, including Cleveland, Toledo, Lakewood, Lorain, Parma, Sandusky, and Cuyahoga County. The funding is comprised of Community Development Blocks Grants (CDBG) provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. As a senior Member of the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Kaptur has led the effort to increase funding for CDBG as a whole and supported expanding funding for communities struggling to address the COVID-19 pandemic.

"During these challenging times, I and my office have fielded thousands of calls from Northern Ohioans in need of assistance," said Rep. Kaptur. "That is why I am pleased to see this important funding being directed to help struggling communities as a result of COVID-19. This funding will help towns and cities who are desperate for economic support."

"Close to four months have passed since House Democrats passed the HEROES Act, legislation to provide even greater assistance to struggling families and communities, including stimulus payments, robust funding for all localities, support for essential frontline workers, and much more. Yet the Trump Administration and Senate Republicans have failed to act and have let the American people down in their time of need. I call on the White House and Senate Republicans to immediately pass the HEROES Act."

Today's announcement is a result of the CARES Act passed by Congress and signed into law earlier this year in response to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic. This funding represents the third and final tranche of CDBG CARES Act funding.

A breakdown of the funding appears below:

Community Development Block Grants

Cleveland: $2,595,267
