Kaptur Announces Ohio Will Receive Additional $172M for Weatherization Assistance from Jobs & Infrastructure Bill

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) announced Ohio will receive an additional $172,384,124 in federal funding for home weatherization and energy efficiency upgrades from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Last year, Rep. Kaptur joined nearly every House Democrat to pass the Jobs and Infrastructure bill, while 94 percent of House Republicans opposed it.
This week, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released the formula funding amounts that each state will receive as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act’s more than $3 billion allocation for DOE’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). Ohio will receive an additional $142,301,424 for WAP programming and $30,082,700 for WAP training and technical assistance.
States can utilize and distribute WAP funding to retrofit low-incomes homes through the installation of insulation, updating of heating and cooling systems, and upgrading of electrical appliances. These improvements reduce household energy use, lower emissions, and save consumers money. The State of Ohio will submit a formal plan to DOE at a later date outlining its specific plan for WAP funding and a timeline for distribution.
“The Jobs and Infrastructure bill’s investment in Ohio continues to pay dividends for our workers, families, and seniors,” said Rep. Kaptur. “Our region is particularly impacted by the high cost of home heating during the winter, which is why I fought vigorously to increase funding for weatherization programs. By restoring older homes to make them safer, healthier, and more energy efficient – we will lower utility costs for our most vulnerable, improve quality of life throughout our neighborhoods, and support living-wage jobs for our skilled workers.”
“NeighborWorks Toledo Region is very pleased with the announcement of additional weatherization funding heading toward Ohio,” said NeighborWorks Toledo Region CEO Bill Farnsel. “This resource will enable NeighborWorks to extend energy conservation work to double or maybe triple the normal number of households in Toledo annually and carry on with this significant expansion over many years into the future. This is a perfect example of how Congresswoman Kaptur’s leadership on energy conservation issues makes a lasting difference in our community.”
