Kaptur Announces Senior Advocate Sue Daugherty as Guest for 2024 Presidential State of the Union Address
Washington, DC — Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), announced she will host Sue Daugherty, Founding Executive Director of Serving Our Seniors as her guest for the Presidential State of the Union address on Thursday, March 7th, 2024.
Serving Our Seniors is a non-profit organization founded in 1996, located in Sandusky, Ohio that supports Erie County seniors as they progress in life. In 1996 Judge Jane Lucal led a group of senior citizen advocates in Erie County who came together to develop a “one-stop-shop” to call if an older adult had a question, problem, or concern as they grew older in Erie County. Sue Daugherty is the founding Executive Director, and ran with this early goal, turning Serving Our Seniors into a premiere organization benefiting the older adults of Erie County, Ohio. Serving Our Seniors offers essential services and coordinates with existing services to support older adults. Serving Our Seniors empowers older adults to access health care and social services to lead functionally independent lives while staying in the comfort of their own homes. The agency sponsors forums to educate the 60+ age group on important issues to them such as Social Security, Medicare, and other services.
“In Congress I have long championed assistance for seniors across our country. In the last few years alone I have co-sponsored legislation to lower prescription drug costs, cap the cost of insulin for seniors on Medicare at $35 per month, and to raise Social Security payments to keep up with modern times,” said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09). “This year I am honored to have a champion for Erie County seniors, Sue Daugherty the Founding Executive Director of Serving Our Seniors, join me as my guest for the State of the Union. Sue has dedicated her life, knowledge, and experience to create a network for aging Ohioans to receive better treatment and resources as they age. Sue Daugherty truly represents the best-in-class in Ohio’s senior advocate community, having spent nearly four decades of her life ensuring that our seniors can age with dignity.”
“Congresswoman Kaptur has earned my utmost respect and admiration for her work representing the best interests of older Americans,” said Sue Daugherty, Founding Executive Director of Serving Our Seniors. “I am honored, beyond words, to learn that she has selected me to be her guest at the State of the Union.”
Sue Daugherty’s passion for gerontology was born out of her experience as a nursing assistant in the summer following her freshman year at Ohio University. Sue went on to receive her Bachelor's degree from Ohio University, and earned her Master of Public Administration from Cleveland State University. Sue Daugherty helped establish Serving Our Seniors as a system that advocates for older adults. She has received nearly a dozen community service awards throughout her career including the 2002 Acts of Caring Award from the National Association of Counties.
