Kaptur Announces Winners of Congressional App Challenge
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), announced the winners of the Ohio 9th Congressional District's first annual Congressional App Challenge. Victor Yavornitzky, Alexander Gee, and John Jusko's software application "MyHighSchoolJourney" was selected by a panel of judges as the winner of this year's competition. Their app is designed to organize a student's high school experiences for the college application process and was selected as the winner based on its design, creativity, and functionality. Congresswoman Kaptur looks forward to meeting the winners and learning first-hand of the skills and expertise that went into the creation of their application.
The Congressional App Challenge is a district-level competition for high school students to foster coding skills and inspire students to pursue careers in computer science. Additional standout apps came from Kamryn Ohly of Perkins High School in Sandusky, and Yukyeong Seo of Parma Franciscan High School, who placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. Impressive submissions were also received from Horizon Science Academy in Lorain, Ohio, and St. Francis De Sales High School in Toledo, Ohio.
"Victor, Alexander, and John's submission was impressive in its widespread application for young people around the country who are organizing their high school experience in preparation for undergraduate institutions, community college, or technical schools," said Rep. Kaptur. "We had strong submissions and participation from across the district. Developing STEM education must be a priority for our nation, and the Congressional App Challenge is an opportunity to foster critical skills."
Rep. Kaptur received a total of 10 app submissions from students at five high schools in Ohio's 9th Congressional District in her first year hosting the competition. Lucas, Erie, Lorain, and Cuyahoga counties were each represented. The judges for this year's competition included computer science professionals and scholars from across the district.
Winners of the 2019 Congressional App Challenge will be eligible to attend the #HouseOfCode Capitol Hill Reception in Washington, D.C., where their app will be featured in the United States Capitol Building. Victor, Alexander, and Paul will also receive gift certificates from Amazon, a sponsor of the competition.
