Kaptur Applauds House Passage of Social Security Fairness Act, Urges Swift Senate Action
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee applauded the bipartisan passage of the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023 in the House of Representatives by an overwhelming vote of 327 to 75 on Tuesday, November 12. This legislation eliminates the harmful Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), and the Government Pensions Offset (GPO), which reduces or eliminates earned Social Security benefits for public servants, including police officers, firefighters, educators and others.
Currently the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) impacts approximately 2 million Social Security beneficiaries, including over 165,000 Ohioans. The Government Pension Offset (GPO) impacts almost 800,000 retirees across the country. The bill is endorsed by major workforce organizations, including the National Association of Letter Carriers, National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, National Committee to Protect Social Security and Medicare, The Senior Citizens League, American Federation of Teachers, and Fraternal Order of Police among others.
"I extend my deep thanks to Representatives Garret Graves of Louisiana and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia for their bipartisan leadership and dedication to find the ‘Big Middle’ on this pressing issue." said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09). "In a time of severe partisanship, I am pleased to note that 327 members voted for this bipartisan legislation’s passage. I hope we can use this as a model for collaboration and success we can find when we work across the aisle to solve important issues facing our nation. I look forward to swift Senate passage so this bill that benefits public servants and retirees can be sent to the President’s desk and signed into law. I will keep working to strengthen and protect Social Security for generations to come."
Congresswoman Kaptur remains a voice in opposition to benefit cuts for retirees and continues to be a staunch advocate to strengthen and protect Social Security for generations to come.
