Kaptur Applauds Milestone Of 1 Million Pensions Saved Nationwide Through Legislation She Championed

June 25, 2024

62,000 Pensions Have Been Saved Across The Buckeye State

Toledo, OH – Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) applauded the milestone of 1 Million pensions saved nationwide, including 62,000 pensions saved across the State of Ohio through implementation of the Butch Lewis Act, which became law as part of the American Rescue Plan Act in November 2021. Rep. Kaptur long championed and led the charge on efforts to protect these pensions, first by introducing the Keep our Pension Promises Act in June, 2015, and later by co-introducing the Rehabilitation for Multiemployer Pensions Act in November, 2017. These pieces of legislation would go on to become part of the Butch Lewis Act, which was named in honor of an Ohio Teamster. In July, 2022, Rep. Kaptur celebrated implementation of the Butch Lewis Act

“Imagine working for a pension and sacrificing to pay into it only to find your employer didn’t hold up their end of the deal. Retirement security is Middle Class security, and those who labored throughout their lives deserve to benefit from the fruits of their labor,” said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09). “Thanks to the Butch Lewis Act, we have strengthened the bedrock multi-employer retirement system and ensured that retirees and their families are able to live with the dignity they have earned. In less than two years since implementation of this landmark legislation more than 1 Million pensions have been protected nationwide, including 62,000 across Ohio. I am honored we kept the promise made to those who worked hard and paid their share for these pensions and for retirement security.”
