Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Co-Chair of the Congressional Poland Caucus, released the following statement ahead of the White House meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Polish President Andrzej Duda:

“As a Polish-American and someone who deeply values the U.S.-Poland relationship, I am troubled by President Trump’s inappropriate efforts to insert himself into Polish domestic politics and boost President Duda’s reelection with a White House visit,” said Rep. Kaptur. “Unfortunately, President Trump’s invitation is not surprising given his favorability toward strongmen and those who undermine democratic institutions.”

“I am especially concerned by Duda’s recent comments comparing the LGBTQ community to communism. It insults the very people who elected him and liberty lovers everywhere, who for decades struggled to lift the yoke of communist oppression from their shoulders. I urge President Trump to cancel this meeting and for President Duda to apologize for his unacceptable comments.”
