Kaptur Calls on President Trump, Polish President Duda to Counter Democratic Backsliding, Strengthen Resilience Against Russia
Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), Co-Chair of the Congressional Poland Caucus, released the following statement ahead of the White House meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Polish President Andrzej Duda:
“As a long-time friend of the liberty-loving people of Poland and a grateful American of Polish heritage, I welcome President Duda in his efforts to strengthen U.S.-Poland relations with his visit to the United States,” said Rep. Kaptur. “Poland contributes greatly to the Transatlantic Alliance, as a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a leader in the European Union, and loyal ally fighting at America’s side in all recent major conflicts.”
“Unfortunately, I have growing concerns about the current government’s efforts to draw inward, curtailing critical democratic protections such as a free press, an independent judiciary, and a nonpartisan military. Right-wing, nationalistic extremism is on the rise in Poland, as evidenced by troubling anti-Semitic rallies, inflammatory rhetoric, and anti-immigrant hate speech. The deeply tragic assassination of visionary Gdansk mayor, Pawel Adamowicz, sent shock waves to the world.
“In this new era, with Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics aimed at escalating division in Europe, and elsewhere, the free world needs Poland to be a leader in helping to build European and Transatlantic unity, not division. Both Europe and Poland’s own history teach us the tragic consequences of ethnic rivalry and the heroic struggle required to build democratic institutions out of the ashes. I call on President Trump to urge and press President Duda to avoid democratic backsliding and strengthen resilience against the threats to freedom from Russia and other repressive regimes.”
