Kaptur, Colleagues Urge Congressional Leadership to Act on Lowering Health Care Costs

May 26, 2022

Washington, D.C. – This week, Representative Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) joined 26 House Democrats in a letter sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urging them to prioritize legislation that lowers health care costs.

In the letter to House and Senate leaders, Rep. Kaptur and her colleagues called for a vote on legislation to permanently expand the enhanced advance premium tax credits that were included as part of the American Rescue Plan. These tax credits lowered the cost of Affordable Care Act Healthcare Marketplace plans – saving an average family $2,400 per year – but will expire before the next Open Enrollment period unless Congress makes them permanent.

“Our constituents elected us to lower their health care costs – and through the American Rescue Plan Act, we did just that,” wrote Rep. Kaptur and her colleagues. “Thanks to the enhanced advance premium tax credits in the American Rescue Plan Act, individuals and families have seen their health care costs decrease substantially. . . By extending enhanced advance premium tax credits and providing coverage for people in non-expansion states, we will deliver on the promises we made to our constituents to lower their health care costs and protect their care.”
