Kaptur, Fedor Announce the Release of CARES Act Dollars

September 23, 2020

Toledo, OH – Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) and state Senator Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) announced that $650 million in federal funding will be distributed to Ohio local governments, with more than $30 million going to communities and villages throughout Lucas County. The additional funding was amended on Tuesday into House Bill 614 in an effort to speed up passage in the Ohio House of Representatives. Local governments may use their allocations, which come from the $4.5 billion Ohio received from the CARES Act earlier this year, for costs directly associated with Covid-19 relief.

"It is unacceptable that it has taken so long for the Republican legislature in Columbus to release this vital CARES Act funding," said Rep. Kaptur. "Congress passed the CARES Act in March at the onset of the global coronavirus pandemic with the intent to allocate relief funding as soon as possible. This week, our country surpassed 200,000 Americans dead from Covid-19, an incalculable and preventable loss. Ohioans need the assistance that is promised and owed to them. I call on the Republican-led Ohio legislature to stop dragging their feet and immediately advance the more than $1 billion that has yet to be allocated."

"The CARES Act was passed months ago, but there is still more than $1 billion sitting in state coffers when Ohio families need help now. Federal assistance doesn't assist anyone when it sits in a bank account," Fedor said. "I will keep fighting until the money is distributed into communities to provide long-overdue relief to Ohio families. While we wait, people are in danger of losing their homes, people are going hungry and some communities are looking at cutting social services. Our constituents can't afford to wait until after the election for us to act."

The bill passed on the Ohio Senate floor Wednesday and will now go back to the House of Representatives for concurrence.
