Kaptur Response To State of the Union Address

February 24, 2026

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) released the following statement in response to President Trump’s State of the Union Address:

“Tonight, President Trump spoke of the Golden age, and untold prosperity for the American people. But for thousands of the people I represent across Northwest Ohio who struggle just to get by this speech fell flat. Millions of Americans, 500,000 across Ohio, and 30,000 in the District I represent just lost access to health care as ACA credits expired. 10 million more will lose coverage in the year to come due to cuts in the Big Bonanza for Billionaires Bill. Millions have lost access to much needed food assistance, while prices at the grocery store continue to rise. Daycare centers and rural hospitals are closing. Ill-considered tariffs have cost every hardworking family more than $1,750 and caused untold inflation which is making everyday life unaffordable.

“I will work with anyone on either side of the aisle to make life better for the people of Northwest Ohio. But we cannot pretend all is well when many of our fellow citizens know it simply is not. Tonight I brought a young trailblazer, and a Republican Mayor as my guests to the State of the Union. I believe we need to think of the future, and work across the aisle to find the Big Middle to make positive change in our country for all people, not just the Billionaire class. Progress requires all hands on deck, not just bonanzas for Billionaires.

“I will keep fighting to make our nation better, to make life more affordable, and to help all the people I represent succeed. I hope that my colleagues across the aisle will join me in this pursuit, because all the people we represent surely need it.”
