Kaptur Statement After Trump Signals $15 Million Cut to 180th Fighter Wing to Pay for Border Wall
Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), a senior member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, released the following statement after a document released Monday by Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan identified that a $15 million project at Toledo Express Airport could be diverted to pay for President Trump’s border wall. Kaptur spearheaded the $15 million investment to fund construction of a hangar at Toledo Express Airport to support Toledo’s 180th Fighter Wing and the military’s northern border protection initiative, deemed Northern Watch.
“The 180th Fighter Wing has the incredible responsibility of protecting our northern border, a responsibility we in Toledo and Northern Ohio take very seriously,” said Rep. Kaptur. “For the President to take appropriated funds from the 180th to pay for his wall would not only be a disservice to the brave men and women serving in the 180th, who rely on these funds to maintain facilities and operational readiness, it would also be an unconstitutional diversion of funds.
“The President cannot be allowed to further undermine our national security with his fake national emergency. For that reason, I am urging my Republican colleagues, especially those in Ohio, to uphold their oath to defend the Constitution and vote to overturn the President’s veto.”
Roughly $100 million in Military Construction projects across Ohio are at risk because of President Trump’s national emergency. In addition to the 180th Fighter Wing project in Toledo, Ohio military construction projects on the list include:
- $68 million at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton
- $13 million at Ohio Air National Guard base near Mansfield
- $9 million for security upgrades at Youngstown Air Reserve Station
- $7.4 million to build an automated machine gun range at Camp Ravenna’s Joint Military Training Center
