Kaptur Statement on Appointment to House Agriculture Committee

May 11, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) released the following statement after being appointed to the House Agriculture Committee.

The House Agriculture Committee has wide jurisdiction over federal policies relating to farm commodities, conservation, forestry, nutrition, biotechnology, and more. Rep. Kaptur previously served as the Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee up until the 107th Congress.

“Growing up, my parents ran a small family grocery where we took great pride in offering fresh local produce sourced from neighboring farmers,” said Rep. Kaptur. “With millions of acres of farmland, and tens of thousands of family farms, Ohio’s rural communities help make, build, and grow America. I am honored to join the Agriculture Committee, and look forward to ensuring America’s industrial and agricultural heartland receives the attention and investment it deserves.”

Rep. Kaptur has long championed agricultural initiatives and programs that protect American farmers against unfair global trade practices, invest in rural development, water management, and electrification, and promote biofuel innovation, urban agriculture, and farmers’ markets. Through her leadership on the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, Rep. Kaptur helped create the Seniors Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program, which has provided seniors with coupons to purchase produce from local farmers’ markets since 2001. In 2020, more than 22,000 Northern Ohio seniors benefited from the program.
