Kaptur Statement on Meeting with Greenbelt Place Owner, Residents
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) released the following statement after convening a meeting at her Maritime Building office with the owner of the Greenbelt Place Apartments, residents of the complex, and local officials.
On September 28, Rep. Kaptur sent a letter to Rene Campos, managing partner of Eureka Holdings, requesting he visit Toledo to discuss the conditions in which residents are living.
On October 8, Mr. Campos met with Rep. Kaptur, Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken, Toledo City Council Member Vanice Williams, Toledo Department of Neighborhoods Director Rosalyn Clemens, Toledo Police Chief George Krall, a representative of Senator Sherrod Brown’s office, and residents of the Greenbelt Place Apartments.
“The immediate inspection we requested from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has been completed – resulting in a failing grade of 36 out of 100 for Greenbelt Place,” said Rep. Kaptur. “Eureka Holdings now has a responsibility to bring the complex up to a passing grade of 80 or higher – within a period of time prescribed by HUD – or face serious consequences from the federal government. From the beginning, our top priority has been to protect the wellbeing of every resident of Greenbelt Place. After significant work from our partners at HUD, the City of Toledo, and Lucas County, we are beginning to see a path forward for the residents and neighbors in North Toledo. After listening today to those whose lives have been disrupted, Mr. Campos committed to rectifying the serious documented issues that plague the property, and to partner with us to bring about tangible, systemic improvements to the operation and maintenance of the complex. While there is much work to be done, and a community-wide response will be necessary, we will not stop until every resident is able to live in the comfort and safety they deserve.”
