Kaptur Statement On Meeting With Lebanese Charge D’Affaires Waël Hachem
Washington, DC — Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) a senior member of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee released the following statement following a meeting on Tuesday, December 12 with Lebanese Charge D’Affaires to the United States Waël Hachem.
“In order to achieve a meaningful and lasting peace in this region, we must express a deeper understanding and sympathy for all individuals who have been painfully impacted by the violence that began on October 7th. My objective remains peace for all, through a two-state solution," said Congresswoman Kaptur. “I spoke with the Charge D'Affaires from Lebanon, Waël Hachem, to continue my diplomatic efforts to secure relief for the people of Gaza and ensure that we are engaging in respectful dialogue with all parties who are affected by this conflict. Head of Mission Hachem has represented his nation in Washington since 2018, and has served honorably in many diplomatic roles for more than 20 years. During our discussion we shared the common view that the primary objective must be a durable peace that secures true stability in the region."
Continuing in her efforts to elevate diplomacy in the tragic and devastating Israel-Gaza war, Congresswoman Kaptur and Charge D’Affaires Hachem stressed their shared prioritization of securing a durable peace through diplomacy and to prevent an expanded conflict. They focused on efforts to pause the fighting and expand humanitarian aid to impacted territories.
Congresswoman Kaptur sought their counsel on prospects for achieving a two-state solution that would benefit both the Israeli and Palestinian people, and reinforced the essential role of Qatar and other adjoining nations in the region. This follows Congresswoman Kaptur’s speaking on November 3rd with Egyptian Ambassador Motaz Zahran, and on November 16th with Jordanian Ambassador Dina Kawar.
