Kaptur Statement on the Passing of AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka

August 5, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) released the following statement on the passing of AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

"For nearly 50 years, Richard Trumka fiercely defended the rights of, and advanced justice for millions of hardworking men and women who clocked in to work every day to build up their own version of the American Dream.

"I have always admired his fight against job-outsourcing and unfair trade agreements such as NAFTA. His reach was global, and he acutely understood the need for working people to band together to better the working conditions for everyone.

"From the coal mines to Congress - workers had no stronger defender when they were attacked by corporate interests or anti-worker lawmakers. I will miss his devotion, and join with the AFL-CIO and all Americans in mourning his passage."
