Kaptur Statement on President Biden’s 2024 State of the Union Address
Washington, DC — Tonight, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development and Co-Chair of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus released the following statement following President Biden’s State of the Union address:
“The American people elected Joe Biden as President because they knew he would invest in communities across our country. Over the last three years he has done just that.
“Tonight, the President highlighted 800,000 new manufacturing jobs across our nation and counting. He touted 46,000 new projects that have been announced across American communities to modernize our roads and bridges, ports and airports, and public transit systems funded with funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. These efforts include a $20 Million RAISE Grant to reconnect Toledo’s downtown and Junction area neighborhoods, $10.8 Million to create jobs and upgrade freight rail lines in Defiance County, and $24.5 Million to rebuild Route 6 in Sandusky.
“I was encouraged to hear President Biden remind Americans that House Democrats helped lower prescription drug costs without a single Republican vote. Because of our work instead of paying $400 a month for life saving insulin, our seniors on Medicare now only pay $35 a month. These are life-changing wins fought for without any support from across the aisle. While some will cut Social Security and Medicare, President Biden and Democrats will stop any effort to gut Social Security, or Medicare, or raise the retirement age dead in its tracks.
“I echo the President’s call for Billionaires and Millionaires to pay their fair share in taxes. That’s how we continue to build our economy from the bottom up, and middle out. It’s how we make our country great, by investing in health care, and education, and defense, and so much more.
"The President reminded those who want to walk away from our leadership on the world stage to remember the history of our support for our European allies in World War II and the unselfishness of our Greatest Generation. We must ensure Putin stops his illegal and unprovoked war of aggression, because we know he will not stop with Ukraine. From standing by our commitment to NATO, to defending the scrimmage line for Liberty in Ukraine, to providing aid for those in need in Gaza, freeing the hostages remaining in captivity held by Hamas, and standing with our Indo-Pacific allies, we have an obligation as leaders of Free World to stand up and show our American values. We all must remember that freedom has never been free.
"I look forward to working with President Biden to ensure that our Great Lakes Region, the Heartland of our country, our workers, and our people are never left behind again.”
