Kaptur Statement on USPS Delays

Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development and Dean of the Ohio delegation, released the following statement in response to widespread delivery delays at the United States Postal Service. In the CARES Act passed earlier this year, Congress provided $10 billion in financing to help USPS and its customers get through the coronavirus pandemic, yet the funds are currently being held hostage by President Trump's Treasury Department. House Democrats provided $25 billion for the Postal Service in the HEROES Act, but Senate Republicans have failed to Act.

"Millions of Americans depend on the Postal Service to make deliveries in a timely and efficient manner," said Rep. Kaptur. "I've already heard from hundreds of Ohioans who are fed up with the recent delays, and I'm just as frustrated as them. In June, the Trump Administration ordered USPS to roll back service during the coronavirus pandemic despite receiving $10 billion in emergency funding for USPS from Congress. The Trump Administration's decision has already made it more difficult for millions of Americans to get the medicines they need, hurt small businesses, and sown confusion for everyone. Furthermore, the President's recent appointment of a major political donor as Post Master General sounds the alarm that the Administration has little intention of getting USPS back on track before the election when Americans will depend heavily on mail-in ballots. Congress must act immediately to hold the Trump Administration accountable and put pressure on the Treasury to release the funds provided to USPS through the CARES Act. We must act now to ensure that Americans are able to get the medications they need when they need them, protect our small businesses and democratic institutions, and end these senseless delays."
