Kaptur Statement on Vote to Fund Government, Prevent Republican Shutdown
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, released the following statement on the House passage of H.R. 6119 – the Further Extending Government Funding Act – which fully funds the federal government and ensures it remains open through February 18, 2022. In a 221-212 vote, every single Democrat supported keeping the federal government open, while every single Republican – except one – voted to shut it down. The legislation will now be taken up by the Senate for its consideration.
“Congress has a responsibility to fund the federal government, and avoid a catastrophic shutdown. Democrats have worked in good faith to find common ground that allows us to meet our national obligations, and deliver essential services to the American people. Unfortunately, Republicans have decided that throwing up roadblocks – and engaging in an endless array of political games – are more important than doing their jobs.
“The people harmed most by this continued obstruction are the hardworking families, seniors, and veterans that I represent. Our Great Lakes region deserves so much better. The American people deserve so much better. We must come together to govern this nation.
“As Chair of the Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee, I worked with our Members in a bipartisan way to craft a funding bill that invests in our seaways and ports, strengthens our energy infrastructure, and creates good-paying jobs.
“The people’s business must be conducted – not held hostage. For the sake of our nation, Republicans must start working in a constructive manner.”
