Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) released the following statement in response to reports that tech glitches and bureaucracy could delay delivery of COVID-19 stimulus checks to a large number of Americans, including millions of seniors who receive Social Security. On Monday, the Internal Revenue Service posted a notice on its website informing Social Security recipients they will have to file a tax return this year:

“It is wrong for President Trump to force senior citizens to jump through hoops and fill out unnecessary paperwork to receive their coronavirus stimulus checks that Congress authorized on a bipartisan basis,” said Rep. Kaptur. “This burden, which likely would result in people leaving their homes during a pandemic to seek help from a tax advisor, is a complete and utter leadership failure of this Administration. The federal government already has capacity to get these individuals the checks they were promised through the Social Security deposit system which Congress initiated. President Trump and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin should immediately reverse course and not pass the buck to seniors. The Administration is fully capable of handling this. The Administration must reverse course. It’s mixed messaging is unsettling and harmful and it must stop.”
