CLEVELAND - The Federal Aviation Administration is giving Cleveland Hopkins International Airport an $8 million grant to prevent the recurrence of runway de-icing problems that resulted in unsafe conditions at the airport over the winter.

Cleveland.com reports the funds will be used to construct a 124,000-square-foot building to house new snow removal equipment.

A FireFish Festival sparked imaginations in between rain showers at Black River Landing in Lorain.

The large fish puppet burned on the Black River about 9:30 p.m. Until then, entertainment included artists sketching and painting with chalk, acrobats, urban dancers, belly dancers and fire twirlers.

James Levin, organizer of FireFish Festival, said he uses imagination for each event.

Researchers from across Ohio and Michigan — and at least one from Maryland — gathered Thursday to share their ideas and news of technology advances concerning western Lake Erie algae.

The Ohio Sea Grant program was held at the Stranahan Theater & Great Hall, a few miles away off Heatherdowns Boulevard in the southwest part of the city.

Researchers took the podium one at a time and gave a series of short presentations to a packed room of nearly 250 attendees, flanked by big screens displaying their PowerPoint slides.

WASHINGTON, DC– Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) joined the National Science Foundation (NSF) to announce the award of $224,937 to The University of Toledo for a three-year project to explore a sustainable treatment approach to the threat of drinking water supplies as a result of increased harmful algal blooms. The project is titled “Engineering Biofilm Dynamics for Cyanotoxins in Biological Water Treatment,” is part of a Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaison with Industry (GOALI) award that begins this month and extends through 2019.

Lorain will host the award Congress gave to Puerto Rican warriors who fought and died for freedom of the United States.

The Congressional Gold Medal of the U.S. Army’s 65th Infantry Regiment will visit Lorain on Sept. 19.

The Army’s 65th Infantry Regiment was the nation’s first segregated Hispanic military unit and the first unit of the Korean War to receive the medal, which is the nation’s highest civilian award.

It will be on display for free to members of the public 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Lorain Historical Society, 329 W. 10th St.
