Officials say a planned wind-farm project in Lake Erie has received a $40 million federal grant for construction costs.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Toledo and other officials announced Friday that Lake Erie Energy Development Corp. will receive the U.S. Department of Energy money over the next three years.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced that Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation (LEEDCo) has been awarded $40 million in grant funding for the offshore "wind farm" wind turbine project in Lake Erie.

LEEDCo is a non-profit organization working to build an offshore wind power industry in Northeast Ohio for clean energy and good jobs

The U.S. Department of Energy is awarding $40 million to the Lake Erie Energy Development Corp. to build a six-turbine pilot wind farm in Lake Erie by the end of 2018.

The award caps a 10-year struggle that began as an idea in the mind of Cleveland Foundation President and CEO Ronn Richard upon his arrival in Cleveland.
