Modifying the StrategicPetroleum Reserve is a bill I introduced before last summer's gasoline pricesurge, and one of a package of bills I have introduced to not only encouragebut support the use of alternative fuels.

"The record-breaking hemorrhage of America'sgood jobs continues unabated as evidenced by the latest trade deficit figuresreleased today," said Kaptur. "Every billion dollars in deficit equalsmore than 10,000 jobs lost. At the same time, the U.S.is becoming more and more beholden to foreign interests who are financing thisnet deficit. We are not only shipping jobs overseas, we are shippingbillions of dollars in interest payments on U.S. debt now held by foreigninterests. It is no surprise that retailing of foreign goods is now America'sbiggest business."

"Though the Republican leadership did not allow a vote onthis amendment, it remains critical that Congress curtail the opportunities forwaste, fraud, and abuse in federal contracting."

"The U.S. Department of Agriculture is the federal agency charged withresponding to problems created by invasive species, such as the Emerald AshBorer, and has not followed Congressional directives," said Kaptur. "Ihope the Bush Administration's approach to this crisis will not be the same asto the hurricane-ravaged Gulf: denial of what really is needed to get the jobdone, and denial that what has been thus far has been too little too late."

"To ignore the public outcry over this ill conceived plan is absolutelyirresponsible," said Kaptur. "The American people elected us to dosomething when an issue like this comes up."

Last afternoon, Republicans voted to block consideration of a bill thatwould have immediately stopped the Bush-Dubai ports deal. Democrats arefighting for real port security to stop the Bush-Dubai deal and to preventfuture contracts allowing foreign governments such as U.A.E. or China to operate U.S.ports and other critical infrastructure.

Toledo,Ohio- Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-9) today announced that she has successfullygarnered federal support totaling $7.5 million dollars to return shipbuildingand repair jobs to the Toledo Shipyard. Kaptur made the announcement asthe Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority reached agreement for a new, locallyowned firm to operate the historic shipyard following the departure of theManitowoc Company last year. Manitowoc'sdeparture left the shipyard idle.
