Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) released the following statement after the House voted to raise the nation's debt ceiling and avoid a catastrophic default. Today's passage of the debt ceiling increase does not authorize additional spending. Instead, it ensures that the U.S. Department of the Treasury can pay for spending that was already authorized – 97 percent of which was incurred prior to President Biden taking office. Every Democrat voted to raise the debt ceiling to cover this spending, while Republicans were unanimous in their opposition.
